China on Monday launched large-scale military drills surrounding Taiwan, involving air, naval, and missile forces, in a move that sharply escalates tensions in one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints.

China’s People’s Liberation Army confirmed the exercises were conducted across multiple zones around Taiwan, including airspace and maritime areas near the Taiwan Strait, marking one of the most expansive operations in the region in recent years.

Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has repeatedly vowed to prevent any move toward formal independence. Military drills around the island have intensified since 2022, often following diplomatic engagements between Taiwan and foreign governments or new arms sales approved by the United States. China maintains that such exercises are defensive in nature and necessary to safeguard national sovereignty.

The current drills are notable for their scale and coordination, combining live-fire components, simulated blockades, and joint operations across multiple branches of the Chinese military. Unlike routine patrols, the exercises explicitly rehearse encirclement and access-denial scenarios, signaling a higher level of operational readiness and strategic messaging.

The drills significantly increase military pressure on Taiwan and test the island’s response capacity, while also sending a warning to external actors involved in cross-strait affairs. Taiwan’s government placed its armed forces on heightened alert and condemned the exercises as destabilizing, while regional observers warned of increased risks to commercial shipping, aviation, and regional security.

The exercises were announced by China’s Eastern Theater Command and involve warships, combat aircraft, missile units, and electronic warfare assets. Taiwanese defense authorities reported numerous Chinese aircraft and vessels operating near Taiwan’s defensive response zones. International airlines and maritime operators issued advisories to avoid designated areas during the drills, underscoring the broader economic and logistical implications of the operation.
