Caracas, Venezuela

Venezuelan authorities are currently holding several United States citizens, according to confirmations from U.S. officials and multiple international news reports, as diplomatic tensions between Caracas and Washington remain high. While the detentions themselves are acknowledged by U.S. government sources, the Venezuelan government has not issued a comprehensive public statement detailing the cases.

Officials in United States say that multiple Americans, including U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, are in Venezuelan custody. Some of these cases are being reviewed or have been formally designated by Washington as “wrongful detentions,” a term used when the U.S. government believes an individual is being held without due process or for political reasons.

The Venezuelan government has not publicly confirmed the total number of U.S. nationals detained or released detailed information on the legal status of each case. In past instances, Venezuelan authorities have acknowledged arresting foreign nationals, including Americans, often alleging involvement in security-related offenses or conspiracies against the state. Such claims have routinely been rejected by U.S. officials.

The issue highlights a longstanding dispute between the two governments. Washington argues that some U.S. citizens are being detained arbitrarily and denied adequate legal protections or consular access. Caracas maintains that arrests are conducted under Venezuelan law and rejects accusations of political motivation.

Independent verification remains limited due to restricted access to detainees and limited transparency in Venezuelan judicial proceedings. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been strained for years, complicating efforts to resolve detention cases through formal channels.

U.S. travel advisories continue to warn Americans against traveling to Venezuela, citing risks that include arbitrary detention and the absence of reliable consular assistance.

As of publication, Venezuelan authorities have not issued a new official statement addressing the most recent reports. The situation remains under close monitoring by international observers and diplomatic officials on both sides.
