Crans-Montana, Switzerland — A devastating fire tore through a crowded bar in the alpine resort town of Crans-Montana early Wednesday morning, leaving several dozen people feared dead and approximately 100 others injured, according to Swiss authorities.
The fire broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m. local time during New Year’s celebrations, when the venue was filled with holiday revelers. Police and emergency officials said the flames spread rapidly, producing heavy smoke that trapped many people inside before they could escape.
Rescue teams described chaotic conditions as firefighters, paramedics, and mountain rescue units rushed to the scene. Dozens of ambulances and medical helicopters were deployed to evacuate the injured, some of whom suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. Hospitals across the canton of Valais activated emergency protocols as they worked to treat the influx of patients.
Authorities said the exact number of fatalities has not yet been confirmed, as identification efforts are ongoing. However, officials indicated that “several dozen” people are believed to have died, making the incident one of the deadliest peacetime fires in Switzerland in recent years.
Investigators stated there is no indication the fire was intentional or linked to terrorism. Preliminary information suggests the blaze may have been accidental, possibly connected to indoor decorations or celebratory elements used during the New Year’s event. Officials cautioned that the cause remains under investigation and urged the public to avoid speculation.
Swiss federal and regional leaders expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full support for those affected. Authorities also announced that a formal review of safety measures at entertainment venues would likely follow once the investigation is complete.
Crans-Montana, a well-known international ski destination in the Swiss Alps, attracts thousands of visitors during the winter holiday season. As recovery efforts continue, officials said their priority remains assisting victims, supporting families, and determining how the tragedy unfolded
