UNITED NATIONS / WASHINGTON — The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, warned that recent actions by the United States involving Venezuela represent a “dangerous precedent” under international law, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal.
In a statement delivered through his spokesperson, Guterres said he was “deeply alarmed” by the developments and stressed that, irrespective of political conditions inside Venezuela, the use of force by one state against another risks undermining core principles of the international system.
The Secretary-General emphasized the need for full respect for international law, including the United Nations Charter, which restricts the use of force except in cases of self-defense or with authorization from the U.N. Security Council. He cautioned that unilateral actions by powerful states could weaken long-standing norms designed to prevent conflict and preserve national sovereignty.
The comments come amid heightened international scrutiny and growing diplomatic fallout, as governments and international bodies assess the implications of the U.S. move for global stability and the rules-based order. Diplomats said the issue is expected to be raised formally at the United Nations, where Security Council members may seek emergency consultations.
U.S. officials have defended their actions as justified under domestic and international legal frameworks, while critics argue the operation risks setting a precedent that other countries could invoke to justify similar interventions.
The situation remains fluid, with further statements anticipated from Washington, Caracas, and the United Nations as diplomatic efforts intensify.
