Former national security adviser says repeated comments about taking over Greenland weaken alliance trust and embolden adversaries.

Former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton warned Monday that remarks by former President Donald Trump about taking control of Greenland pose a serious threat to the cohesion and credibility of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, raising concerns among allied nations about the United States’ commitment to collective defense.
Bolton said that even rhetorical suggestions of acquiring Greenland — a self-governing territory of Denmark, a NATO member — undermine the core principles of mutual respect and sovereignty that sustain the alliance. He argued that such statements, regardless of intent, introduce uncertainty among allies at a time when NATO faces mounting geopolitical challenges.
Greenland holds growing strategic importance due to its Arctic location, where military and economic competition involving Russia and China has intensified. Bolton emphasized that careless remarks about territorial control weaken diplomatic trust and risk signaling instability within the alliance, potentially giving adversaries opportunities to exploit perceived divisions.
Trump first proposed the idea of purchasing Greenland during his presidency, prompting swift rejection from Danish and Greenlandic officials. While the proposal was widely dismissed as unrealistic, Bolton warned that continued references to it erode confidence in U.S. leadership and commitment to international norms.
The comments come amid broader debates in the United States over foreign policy direction, alliance obligations, and the balance between unilateral rhetoric and diplomatic responsibility in maintaining global security.
