A sudden shift in tone follows days of escalating rhetoric, sanctions, and U.S. threats toward Colombia under the Trump administration.

U.S. President Donald Trump has invited Colombian President Gustavo Petro to the White House, signaling a sharp diplomatic reversal just days after publicly threatening Colombia with potential military action amid rising tensions over drug trafficking and regional security.
Speaking on Wednesday, President Trump said he held a “friendly” phone conversation with President Petro and described the exchange as constructive. Trump stated that Petro personally called to explain Colombia’s position on drug-related issues and broader disagreements with Washington, adding that he appreciated the tone of the discussion and looks forward to meeting Petro in person in the near future.
The invitation follows a volatile period in U.S.–Colombia relations. Earlier this week, Trump accused Petro of being responsible for cocaine production and suggested that U.S. military intervention could be considered as part of expanded counter-narcotics operations in the region. The remarks came shortly after U.S. operations intensified in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific following actions against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Tensions escalated further when the Trump administration imposed sanctions on President Petro and members of his family, placed Colombia on a noncooperation list, and sharply reduced U.S. assistance. Petro responded by condemning U.S. military strikes in the region as an “abhorrent violation” of sovereignty and warned against external interference in Colombian affairs.
Despite the harsh rhetoric, both leaders appear to be stepping back from direct confrontation. Trump framed the phone call as a positive development, emphasizing dialogue over escalation. Petro, while remaining critical of U.S. policy, has signaled openness to diplomatic engagement.
Analysts view the abrupt shift as reflective of Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy style, particularly in Latin America, where confrontational rhetoric is often paired with sudden overtures. The proposed White House meeting could determine whether the relationship stabilizes or remains volatile in the weeks ahead.
