Haiti’s Secretary of State for Public Security, Mario Andrèsol, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring full control of downtown Port-au-Prince, emphasizing improved coordination among security forces and a phased reopening of key strategic routes.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, during an appearance on the program Panel Magik, Andrèsol sought to reassure the public about the security situation in the capital. He stated that Port-au-Prince remains under the authority of state institutions, despite ongoing challenges posed by armed groups.

According to Andrèsol, joint operations involving the Haitian National Police and other security units have intensified, enabling authorities to gradually regain access to critical roads and commercial areas. He described these efforts as part of a broader, methodical strategy aimed at stabilizing the city center and allowing the resumption of economic and administrative activities.

“The recovery of downtown Port-au-Prince is underway,” Andrèsol said, noting what he characterized as tangible progress along several strategic axes. He acknowledged, however, that the process would be gradual and would require sustained coordination, resources, and cooperation from the public.

The Secretary of State stressed that securing public spaces and reopening major routes are essential steps toward restoring public confidence and normalizing daily life in the capital, which has been deeply affected by prolonged insecurity.

While no specific timeline was given for the full reopening of the city center, Andrèsol reiterated that authorities remain determined to maintain pressure on criminal networks and to reestablish the presence of the state throughout Port-au-Prince.
