The Dominican Republic has reiterated its position rejecting the legitimacy of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s claim to power following the July 2024 elections, reaffirming its support for democratic principles and regional solidarity.
In a public statement shared on the social media platform X, Dominican President Luis Abinader said his government continues to closely monitor developments in Venezuela and emphasized that Santo Domingo never recognized Maduro’s proclamation as president after the contested vote.
Abinader recalled that the Dominican Republic promoted the Santo Domingo Declaration in August 2024, a regional initiative that called for respect for the will of Venezuelan voters and adherence to democratic norms. The declaration was supported by several regional actors concerned about electoral transparency and political repression in Venezuela.
“The solidarity between the Dominican and Venezuelan peoples is historic,” Abinader stated, adding that his government remains willing to collaborate in efforts aimed at restoring democracy, peace, and national harmony in Venezuela.
The Dominican president concluded by asserting that his country will “always stand on the side of democracy,” regardless of circumstances or political pressure, signaling a firm and principled foreign policy stance amid ongoing regional tensions.
Venezuela has remained politically polarized since the July 2024 elections, with multiple governments and international organizations questioning the legitimacy of the results, while Maduro’s administration continues to reject external criticism.
