A group of Latin American governments issued a joint statement on Saturday rejecting a decree by Honduran President Xiomara Castro that orders a general recount of recent presidential elections, warning that the move undermines democratic institutions and electoral authority in Honduras.
The statement, released by the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was jointly signed by Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. The signatory countries said the decree disregards the authority of Honduras’ National Electoral Council and threatens the country’s democratic order.
The governments also condemned recent acts of political violence targeting opposition members, stressing that any attempt to alter election results through intimidation or force is unacceptable. They reaffirmed that the will of the Honduran people, as expressed at the ballot box, must be respected.
In the communiqué, the countries recognized the official proclamation issued by Honduras’ competent electoral authority, which declared Nasry Asfura president-elect. The election results, they noted, were validated by international observation missions that confirmed the legitimacy of the vote held on November 30.
Calling for stability, the signatories urged all Honduran political forces to respect democratic norms, guarantee a peaceful transition of power, and prioritize dialogue. The statement concluded by expressing confidence that the Honduran people will continue to defend democratic values, freedom, and institutional order.
The joint declaration reflects growing regional concern over political tensions in Honduras and highlights divisions over the handling of post-election disputes in the country.
