Authorities say drone-backed raids aim to weaken gang control as violence and humanitarian needs continue to rise

Haitian security forces have launched a large-scale anti-gang operation in Port-au-Prince, intensifying efforts to regain control of neighborhoods dominated by armed groups and restore public order in the capital.
According to Haitian National Police officials, the operation began on Saturday and included the use of drones in gang-controlled areas. During the operation, one residence linked to gang leader Jimmy Cherizier was destroyed, authorities said. Police spokesperson Frantz Lerebours described the action as part of a broader security push that has been underway since late December.
Gangs are estimated to control nearly 90 percent of Port-au-Prince, a situation that has sharply deteriorated security conditions and contributed to mass displacement. Since the removal of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry, violence has escalated, forcing approximately 1.4 million people from their homes, more than 10 percent of Haiti’s total population.
Haitian police are conducting daily operations with assistance from international partners and private security support. In parallel, diplomatic efforts continue to advance a multinational anti-gang force. According to Albert Ramdin, eighteen countries have pledged personnel for the force, which could include up to 5,500 soldiers intended to reinforce Haiti’s security capacity.
The security crisis is unfolding alongside a severe humanitarian emergency. Officials estimate that 5.7 million people across the country are facing acute food insecurity, including approximately 1.2 million children under the age of five. The scale of the crisis has raised concerns about stability ahead of elections planned for the summer of 2026.
Police officials say the current operations are aimed at regaining control of the capital in the short term. “We are working to restore public order,” Lerebours said, adding that security forces remain committed to continuing operations against armed groups.
