Denmark’s Arctic Commander Says Security Focus Remains on Russia, Not the U.S.

Danish military officials emphasize vigilance toward Russian activity in the Arctic while reaffirming cooperation with the United States and NATO allies.

Denmark’s senior Arctic military commander said Friday that the country’s primary security concern in the Arctic region continues to be Russia, not the United States, amid heightened international attention on Greenland and Arctic defense.

Major General Søren Andersen, head of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command, made the remarks aboard a Danish warship in Nuuk, stating that Danish defense planning is focused on monitoring and countering potential Russian activity rather than guarding against U.S. threats.

According to Andersen, Denmark expects increased Russian presence and operations in the Arctic in the coming years. In response to these concerns, Copenhagen approved a 42 billion Danish crowns Arctic defense package in 2022 aimed at strengthening training, surveillance, and military presence across the region.

The Joint Arctic Command oversees a broad range of responsibilities, including maritime surveillance, sovereignty enforcement, and search-and-rescue operations across Greenland and surrounding waters. The command operates naval vessels, aircraft, helicopters, satellite systems, and the Sirius dog-sled patrol, which conducts long-range patrols in remote areas of northeast Greenland.

Addressing speculation about potential tensions within NATO, Andersen dismissed such scenarios as “hypothetical,” emphasizing continued close collaboration with the United States. He noted regular engagement with U.S. military personnel through meetings and joint exercise invitations.

Denmark has invited the United States to participate in the Arctic Endurance exercise scheduled for later this year, while European nations recently deployed personnel for Arctic activities. Andersen confirmed that a Russian research vessel was operating approximately 310 nautical miles from Greenland at the time of his remarks but said there were no Russian or Chinese naval ships near Greenland waters.

Although U.S. forces were invited to Arctic Endurance, they did not take part in a Danish military exercise held in September. Andersen did not characterize the absence as politically significant.

Danish officials continue to describe the Arctic as a strategically sensitive region requiring sustained monitoring, allied cooperation, and long-term investment as geopolitical competition intensifies in the High North.
