OAS Reaffirms February 7, 2026 End Date for Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council

Organization urges Haitian-led governance decisions, stresses security, elections, and time-limited transition mechanisms.

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) announced on January 22 that it continues to closely monitor Haiti’s political situation and remains engaged in dialogue with Haitian authorities amid persistent uncertainty surrounding the country’s current transitional framework.

In its statement, the OAS recalled that the mandate of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) is scheduled to conclude on February 7, 2026, in accordance with the political agreement signed on April 3, 2024. The organization emphasized that this timeline is an integral part of the transition’s legal and political foundation.

The OAS stated that decisions regarding future governance arrangements must be determined by Haitian leadership and relevant national stakeholders. Any political structure emerging from the transition process, the organization noted, should be clearly defined, strictly time-limited, and designed to preserve the temporary nature of transitional mechanisms.

The statement further underscored the need for a results-focused approach, prioritizing the restoration of security and the organization of elections. According to the OAS, the effectiveness of the transition will depend on strong coordination among national actors, as well as constructive engagement with international partners, while maintaining Haitian ownership of the process.

Describing the moment as critical in Haiti’s history, the OAS acknowledged the country’s ongoing security challenges and the urgent need to rebuild legitimately elected institutions as a foundation for economic and social recovery. In this context, the organization highlighted the importance of preserving stability, dialogue, and institutional continuity, while reinforcing existing progress.

The OAS concluded by calling on all political actors and sectors of Haitian society to act responsibly in the interest of peace and the well-being of the Haitian people. The organization reaffirmed that Haiti remains a priority and reiterated its commitment to supporting stable governance and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
