House Democrats argue ordinary households should receive the same electricity tax relief currently granted to large data centers.

Indiana House Democrats say Republican lawmakers have voted against a proposal that would have extended a sales tax exemption on utility bills to Indiana residents, an exemption that currently applies to data centers operating in the state.
In a statement posted on social media, the Indiana House Democratic caucus said House Republicans rejected giving households the same relief from the state’s 7 percent sales tax on electricity that data centers receive. The caucus framed the vote as a matter of tax fairness, arguing that ordinary consumers should not be taxed on utilities when large corporate facilities are exempt.
Indiana, like many states, has offered tax incentives to attract data centers, which are energy-intensive operations that support cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure. These incentives often include exemptions on sales tax for electricity and equipment, justified by supporters as a way to encourage investment and job creation.
Democrats contend that rising utility costs have placed additional strain on families and that extending similar tax relief to residents would provide direct cost-of-living support. They argue that exempting data centers while taxing households creates an imbalance that favors corporations over consumers.
Republican lawmakers have not publicly responded in detail to the Democratic caucus’s statement. In past debates, GOP leaders have generally defended targeted tax incentives as tools for economic development while expressing concern about the fiscal impact of broad-based tax exemptions.
The dispute highlights a broader policy debate at the Statehouse over how Indiana structures tax incentives, who benefits from them, and whether relief aimed at attracting large businesses should be matched with measures that directly reduce costs for residents.
