The United States and Nigeria have formally launched a Joint Working Group aimed at addressing religious freedom concerns and strengthening security cooperation, according to a statement released by the U.S. Mission Nigeria.
The initiative was announced following a meeting held last week in Abuja and is intended to respond to Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern under U.S. religious freedom legislation. The designation reflects ongoing concerns related to religiously motivated violence and the protection of vulnerable communities, including Christians, in several parts of the country.
According to U.S. officials, the working group will focus on reducing violence, enhancing security coordination, and improving accountability for those responsible for attacks linked to armed groups and extremist activity. The initiative is framed as a collaborative effort between both governments to reinforce stability while supporting Nigeria’s responsibility to safeguard its population.
The Country of Particular Concern designation was issued during the administration of Donald Trump, citing persistent challenges related to religious freedom and security. U.S. authorities stated that the working group will serve as an ongoing platform for dialogue, coordination, and evaluation of progress.
The meeting took place in Abuja, with senior officials from both countries in attendance. U.S. representatives reiterated that advancing religious freedom remains a core component of U.S. foreign policy and regional engagement.
No timeline was announced for future meetings or for the implementation of specific measures arising from the working group.
