Haiti’s Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé assumed the role of acting head of state on Saturday following the expiration of the mandate of the Transitional Presidential Council.

The transition comes after an internal political dispute within the council. A majority of council members had voted in favor of Fils-Aimé’s removal; however, he ultimately prevailed in the dispute and moved to take over the responsibilities of head of state as the council’s legal authority came to an end.

The development marks a significant shift in Haiti’s transitional governance process, highlighting ongoing institutional uncertainty and political fragmentation at the highest levels of the state. It also raises questions about the legal framework governing executive authority in the absence of a fully functioning transitional body.

As Haiti continues to navigate a prolonged political transition, attention is now focused on how executive power will be exercised, whether new transitional arrangements will be announced, and how both domestic actors and international partners will respond to the latest shift in leadership.
