Buenos Aires, Argentina – The Government of Argentina has officially designated the Egyptian, Lebanese and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organizations, President Javier Milei announced on Thursday. The decision follows a coordinated evaluation by multiple government ministries and agencies and reflects Buenos Aires’ intent to strengthen national and international counter-terrorism efforts.
According to an official statement from the Presidency, the designation was based on official reports alleging that the listed branches engaged in illegal transnational activities, including acts of terrorism, public calls for violent extremism and operational or financial links with other terror-designated entities. The new designation adds these Brotherhood branches to Argentina’s Public Registry of Persons and Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and their Financing (RePET).
President Milei’s announcement aligns Argentina with recent policy decisions taken by the United States, which earlier this month designated the same Muslim Brotherhood branches as terrorist organizations under U.S. counter-terrorism law. In Washington’s case, the Lebanese group was labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization, and the Egyptian and Jordanian branches were designated as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, part of a broader effort to disrupt extremist networks internationally.
Officials in Buenos Aires stated that the new designation strengthens Argentina’s legal framework for preventing, detecting and penalizing terrorism and its financing, ensuring that individuals and entities linked to extremist activity cannot operate freely within or through Argentina. The government’s statement emphasized that this move is consistent with Argentina’s international commitments in the fight against terrorism and its financing, and complies with domestic legal standards.
The measure has drawn support from several international partners. The United Arab Emirates embassy in Buenos Aires welcomed the designation, describing it as an important step in countering violence and destabilizing activities associated with extremist groups and underscoring broader cooperation on counter-terrorism among like-minded states.
The Muslim Brotherhood, originally founded in Egypt in 1928, has historically operated across the Middle East and beyond. While some nations have previously classified the organization as a terrorist group, others regard it as a socio-political movement. The decision by Argentina marks a significant development in Latin America’s engagement with global counter-terrorism norms and reflects growing international scrutiny of the organization’s activities.
