The 2026 Caribbean Series has been thrown into uncertainty after Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico announced they will not travel to Venezuela to participate in the tournament.
The Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation (CBPC) confirmed Monday night that the three leagues formally notified organizers of their decision following internal evaluations of security, logistics, and operational conditions. The Caribbean Series traditionally features champion teams from the region’s winter baseball leagues and is regarded as one of the most prestigious events in international baseball.
According to the CBPC, discussions with participating leagues had been ongoing for several weeks. Despite assurances from Venezuelan organizers, officials from the three countries concluded that current conditions do not meet the standards required to ensure the safety of players, coaching staffs, officials, and support personnel.
The absence of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico represents a major challenge for the tournament. Together, the three nations account for a significant share of the Caribbean Series’ fan base, competitive balance, and commercial appeal. Their withdrawal raises serious questions about the viability of the 2026 edition in its current form.
CBPC officials said they are now assessing alternative scenarios, including relocating the tournament to another host country or postponing the event altogether. No final decision has been announced, and additional meetings with member leagues are expected in the coming weeks.
Venezuela has hosted the Caribbean Series in the past, most recently in 2023. However, ongoing political instability, economic difficulties, and security concerns have continued to influence decisions by regional sports organizations and international partners.
League officials emphasized that the decision was based on risk assessments and operational considerations rather than political motivations.
The CBPC is expected to provide further updates later this month as discussions continue.
