Activists cite Article 6 of the UN Charter, though any expulsion would require Security Council approval and faces significant legal and political obstacles.

Civil society organizations in Chile have announced the launch of an international advocacy campaign urging the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations, according to reports circulating on social media and statements attributed to activist groups.
The campaign references Article 6 of the United Nations Charter, which provides a mechanism for the expulsion of a member state that persistently violates the principles outlined in the Charter. Supporters of the initiative argue that this provision should be invoked in response to Israel’s actions, which they claim contravene international law and UN resolutions.
The effort, however, is being driven by non-governmental actors and does not represent an official position or action by the Chilean government. Civil society groups do not have formal authority within the UN system, and their campaign functions primarily as a political and advocacy initiative aimed at influencing international opinion and diplomatic debate.
Under Article 6 of the UN Charter, expulsion of a member state requires a recommendation from the UN Security Council followed by approval from a two-thirds majority of the General Assembly. Any such recommendation must first pass the Security Council, where the five permanent members—the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China—hold veto power.
Historically, the Security Council has not advanced expulsion proceedings against any member state, and no country has ever been expelled from the United Nations since its founding in 1945. The United States, a permanent member, has consistently opposed measures targeting Israel within the Security Council, making the prospect of a successful expulsion process highly unlikely.
While the campaign is unlikely to result in formal UN action, analysts note that such initiatives are often intended to raise awareness, mobilize public opinion, and increase diplomatic pressure within international forums. Similar advocacy efforts in the past have contributed to debates and resolutions within UN bodies without leading to expulsion proceedings.
As the campaign gains attention online, observers emphasize the importance of distinguishing between civil society advocacy and formal UN processes, which are governed by strict legal and procedural requirements.
