Cairo warns that silence could undermine Somalia’s sovereignty and destabilize the Horn of Africa following Israel’s reported move regarding Somaliland.

Egypt has urged regional and international actors not to remain silent after Israel reportedly recognized Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland, warning that such a move threatens regional stability and violates established principles of state sovereignty.
Egyptian officials stressed that any unilateral recognition of Somaliland undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity and contradicts international law, as well as African Union and United Nations positions that continue to recognize Somalia as a single, unified state.
Cairo expressed concern that external involvement in the Horn of Africa—particularly by actors outside the region—could intensify existing political and security tensions. The area remains strategically sensitive due to its proximity to major maritime routes linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, which are critical to global trade and regional security.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Despite maintaining its own governing institutions and relative stability, Somaliland has not received formal international recognition. The Somali federal government continues to view the region as an integral part of the country, a position widely supported by international organizations.
Egypt reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, emphasizing that silence in the face of unilateral diplomatic actions could set a dangerous precedent and encourage further destabilization in Africa and beyond.
Officials indicated that Egypt is engaging diplomatically with regional and international partners to address the issue and prevent escalation, calling for adherence to international norms and respect for existing borders.
