Ian Roberts, the former superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, pleaded guilty Thursday to falsely claiming U.S. citizenship on a federal employment form and to unlawfully possessing firearms, according to federal prosecutors.

Roberts admitted to falsely attesting that he was a U.S. citizen on an Employment Eligibility Verification Form, known as an I-9, at the time of his hiring. Prosecutors said he submitted a Social Security card and a driver’s license as documentation. Court records indicate that Roberts had previously been subject to immigration proceedings, including a notice to appear and a final removal order.

The case came to light following a targeted operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Authorities stated that Roberts was pulled over while driving a school-issued Jeep Cherokee and allegedly attempted to flee the traffic stop. Officers reported finding a loaded handgun and approximately $3,000 in cash inside the vehicle. Additional firearms were later discovered at his residence.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed not to pursue additional charges and will recommend leniency at sentencing. A federal judge will determine the final sentence. The firearms involved in the case are expected to be forfeited, and Roberts could face deportation as a result of the conviction.

Des Moines Public Schools serves roughly 30,000 students. The case has drawn national attention and raised questions about leadership vetting, institutional accountability, and oversight within large public school districts. Community members have expressed concern over the impact of the case on public trust in district leadership.

A sentencing date has not yet been announced.
