Search by prosecutors escalates probe into alleged failures to curb illegal content, algorithmic misconduct, and deepfake abuse on the platform.

French prosecutors have raided the Paris headquarters of X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, as part of a widening cybercrime investigation into the company’s handling of illegal and harmful online content.
The search was carried out by France’s Paris cybercrime unit under the authority of the public prosecutor’s office. Investigators seized digital material and documents linked to an ongoing judicial inquiry examining whether X has failed to adequately prevent the spread of criminal content on its platform, including child sexual abuse material, non-consensual deepfake imagery, and content prohibited under French law.
According to prosecutors, the investigation also scrutinizes the platform’s recommendation algorithms and whether automated systems may have contributed to the amplification of unlawful or harmful material. French authorities are examining potential violations related to interference with automated data processing systems, a criminal offense under French law.
The probe was initially opened following complaints by French lawmakers who accused the platform of opaque moderation practices and systemic failures to comply with national legal obligations. Since then, the scope has expanded as regulators intensified scrutiny of large technology platforms operating within the European Union.
X has criticized the investigation, characterizing it as politically motivated and asserting that French authorities are attempting to impose restrictions that undermine freedom of expression. The company has said it cooperates with lawful requests while defending what it describes as open discourse on its platform.
The raid comes amid broader tensions between European regulators and major U.S.-based technology firms over content moderation, artificial intelligence, and platform accountability. Under EU and French law, companies can face significant penalties if found to have facilitated or failed to prevent the dissemination of criminal content.
No charges have been announced at this stage. Prosecutors emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that the search does not imply guilt. Further legal steps, including potential summons of company executives, remain possible as authorities continue reviewing seized materials.
