Hundreds of protesters gathered Saturday outside Royal Mint Court in central London to oppose the proposed construction of a large new Chinese embassy complex, citing national security concerns, potential surveillance risks, and fears of political intimidation.
The demonstration brought together activists, local residents, and lawmakers from multiple parties. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch urged the government to halt the project, warning that the scale and location of the planned embassy present serious security implications for the United Kingdom.
Concerns escalated following reporting by The Daily Telegraph, which revealed that unredacted planning documents show the proposed complex would contain 208 underground rooms. Among them is a concealed chamber located near key fibre-optic and communications infrastructure, prompting warnings from critics that the site could facilitate espionage activities.
Opposition has also emerged within Parliament. Several Labour MPs signed a letter to Communities Secretary Steve Reed urging the government to reject the application, pointing to risks related to national security and the possible intimidation of dissidents and activists critical of the Chinese government. Former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith warned that approving the embassy could enable transnational repression within the UK.
Ministers have stated that a final decision on the project is expected by January 20. Despite mounting opposition, approval is widely anticipated, with reports suggesting the timing is linked to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s planned diplomatic visit to China.
UK security agencies and senior lawmakers have repeatedly raised alarms about Chinese intelligence operations. MI5 and other security services have previously flagged espionage threats, while former intelligence officials and U.S. government representatives have described the proposed embassy location as “highly likely” to be used for spying, even as China seeks to consolidate several existing diplomatic premises into one site.
The Chinese government has dismissed the allegations, stating that the embassy would serve standard diplomatic functions. Nonetheless, public scrutiny and political pressure continue to build as the government approaches its decision deadline.
