Authorities in Cap-Haïtien have begun demolishing illegal constructions erected along the city’s main seafront boulevard, a highly visible public space and one of the northern city’s most frequented areas.
The operation is being led by Government Commissioner Éno Zéphirin alongside Northern Departmental Delegate Marc Présumé. The effort includes heavy machinery operators from the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MTPTC), with security provided by agents of the Haitian National Police (PNH).
According to officials, the demolitions started Thursday, January 8, and specifically target structures built unlawfully on public sidewalks along the boulevard, which faces the Caribbean Sea. The area has seen a recent surge in informal and unauthorized construction, raising concerns over pedestrian safety, urban order, and the preservation of public space.
Police units were deployed throughout the operation to maintain security and ensure the safety of workers and residents. Authorities stated that all constructions considered detrimental to urban planning and the effective management of the city were authorized for removal.
Local officials emphasized that the initiative forms part of broader measures aimed at restoring public infrastructure, enforcing municipal regulations, and improving the overall organization and image of Cap-Haïtien, often referred to as the historic Christophian city.
No major incidents were reported during the demolitions. Authorities indicated that similar enforcement actions may continue in other areas where public spaces have been illegally occupied.
