The Israeli navy opened fire on an Egyptian naval vessel after it entered waters off the coast of Gaza, according to a report aired Thursday evening by Israel’s Hebrew-language Channel 13 and cited by Middle East Monitor.

According to the report, the Egyptian warship crossed into maritime areas off Gaza that Israel considers a restricted zone. Israeli naval vessels subsequently fired at the ship after detecting its presence in the area. No immediate information was released regarding casualties, damage to the vessel, or whether the shots were intended as warning fire.

The waters off Gaza have long been subject to strict Israeli naval enforcement as part of a broader blockade imposed on the enclave. Israel maintains that these maritime restrictions are necessary for security reasons, while critics argue they violate international law and contribute to Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Neither the Israeli military nor the Egyptian government has issued an official public statement detailing the incident as of this writing. Egypt, which maintains diplomatic relations with Israel and plays a key mediating role in Gaza-related negotiations, has historically coordinated with Israeli authorities on security matters in the region.

The reported exchange comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing conflict dynamics surrounding Gaza, raising concerns about the potential for escalation involving neighboring states. Analysts note that any direct military confrontation, even if limited, between Israeli and Egyptian forces would represent a serious development given the longstanding peace treaty between the two countries.

Further details are expected as official responses emerge and additional information becomes available.
