Be’er Sheva, Israel — Judge Benny Sagi, president of the Be’er Sheva District Court, was killed Tuesday in a traffic accident on Highway 6, Israeli authorities confirmed. The judge, who was riding a motorcycle, was involved in a collision with a motor vehicle in the central part of the country.

According to police reports, the crash occurred when a car entered the highway from adjacent terrain and struck Sagi’s motorcycle. Emergency responders pronounced the judge dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was detained and is being questioned in connection with the incident.

Judge Sagi was widely respected in the Israeli legal community for his work overseeing cases in the southern district. Tributes from senior judges, attorneys, and public officials poured in following news of his death. Court officials described him as a dedicated jurist who contributed significantly to the administration of justice in Israel.

Preliminary investigations are underway, and authorities are examining whether negligence played a role in the collision. Police stated that there is no evidence at this stage linking the accident to any form of targeted attack or political motive. Investigators are focusing on traffic factors, including potential reckless driving or impairment.

Despite social media speculation, major media reporting and official statements have not corroborated claims that Judge Sagi was actively presiding over Israel’s high-profile corruption trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the time of the crash.

The legal community has expressed shock at the sudden loss. The district court in Be’er Sheva said it will continue its work and provide support to staff and colleagues affected by the tragedy.

Further updates are expected as the police complete their investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
