PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian political leader Jerry Tardieu has warned that 2026 will be a decisive year for Haiti, identifying governance, security, and elections as the three central challenges that will determine the country’s future.
In a New Year message addressed to the nation, Tardieu, a former member of Parliament for Pétion-Ville and national coordinator of the political movement En Avant, said Haiti is approaching a critical crossroads after years of political instability and institutional breakdown.
Tardieu highlighted the issue of governance after February 7, 2026, the date marking the end of the mandate of the Transitional Presidential Council. He cautioned that without a clear and legitimate framework to guide the country beyond that deadline, Haiti risks falling deeper into political uncertainty and paralysis.
Security remains the second major challenge, according to Tardieu. Armed groups continue to control large portions of the capital and surrounding areas, undermining public safety, economic activity, and state authority. He stressed that restoring security is a prerequisite for any meaningful political or democratic progress.
The third challenge identified is the organization of credible elections. Tardieu emphasized that elections are essential to ending the prolonged transitional period and restoring constitutional order. However, he noted that insecurity, logistical constraints, and a lack of public trust continue to threaten the feasibility of a fair and inclusive electoral process.
Tardieu concluded that the three challenges are inseparable. He warned that without security, elections cannot take place; without elections, governance lacks legitimacy; and without legitimate governance, efforts to stabilize the country will continue to fail. He called on political leaders and civil society to act decisively to prevent 2026 from becoming another lost year for Haiti.
