U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on Tuesday that the United States’ actions involving Venezuela do not amount to a regime change, following a congressional briefing on the situation.
Speaking to reporters after the briefing, Johnson stressed that the objective of U.S. policy is not to impose a new government in Venezuela, but to pressure those who continue to wield power to alter their conduct. He characterized the effort as a demand for behavioral change rather than a political overhaul.
“This is not a regime change,” Johnson said, seeking to clarify Washington’s position amid growing speculation about U.S. intentions in the region.
His remarks come as questions persist over governance in Venezuela following the reported removal of Nicolás Maduro from office. Despite his ousting, elements of the existing power structure reportedly remain influential, raising concerns among U.S. lawmakers and international observers about stability, accountability, and future political direction.
According to CBS News reporting, lawmakers were briefed on the scope and intent of U.S. actions, with officials emphasizing that the strategy focuses on compliance, restraint, and changes in conduct by those still exercising authority.
Johnson’s comments appear aimed at tempering concerns that the United States is pursuing another foreign-driven political transformation in Latin America, a sensitive issue given the region’s history with external intervention.
U.S. officials say the situation remains under close review as developments continue in Venezuela.
