Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke by phone on Sunday with U.S. President Donald Trump, discussing bilateral relations, economic outlooks, and key international issues, according to a statement released by the Brazilian presidency.

During the call, the two leaders exchanged assessments of economic indicators in their respective countries, noting positive growth trends. President Trump emphasized that sustained economic expansion in both the United States and Brazil would have favorable effects across the wider region. Lula welcomed the improved relationship between the two governments, highlighting recent progress that led to the lifting of a significant portion of tariffs previously imposed on Brazilian products.

Lula reiterated a proposal sent to the U.S. State Department in December aimed at strengthening cooperation against organized crime. The Brazilian president expressed interest in expanding joint efforts to combat money laundering and arms trafficking, including freezing assets of criminal organizations and enhancing the exchange of financial transaction data. According to the statement, the proposal was well received by the U.S. president.

On international affairs, Lula addressed the proposed Peace Council initiative presented by the United States, suggesting that its scope be limited to the Gaza conflict and that Palestine be granted representation. He also underscored the need for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including an expansion of permanent seats on the UN Security Council.

The leaders also exchanged views on the situation in Venezuela. Lula stressed the importance of preserving peace and stability in the region while prioritizing the well-being of the Venezuelan population.

The call concluded with agreement on a future visit by President Lula to Washington following his scheduled trips to India and South Korea in February. A date for the visit is expected to be set in the coming weeks.
