New national polling finds strong disapproval of President Donald Trump at its highest level since his return to office, raising concerns for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.

A majority of Americans disapprove of the job Donald Trump is doing as president, according to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist Poll of national adults.
The survey finds that 56% of respondents disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 39% approve. An additional 5% say they are unsure. The approval rating is largely unchanged from January, when 38% approved, indicating that public opinion has remained relatively stable in recent weeks.
However, the intensity of opposition has increased. Among those who disapprove, 51% say they strongly disapprove, the highest share recorded since Trump returned to the Oval Office last year. According to Marist polling data, this level of strong disapproval has been matched only once before—during the period immediately following the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said the results reflect a consistent pattern in how Americans view Trump, distinguishing between his personal brand and his policy agenda.
“It’s a difference between him and his policies. And he doesn’t change,” Miringoff said. “He’s still the Donald Trump that people loved and hated. But the policies are a drag on him right now.”
The poll also suggests potential political consequences for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections. If dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies continues, Miringoff warned that Republican candidates in competitive districts may face growing pressure from voters.
“It can make some swing-state and swing-district Republicans have to scurry for cover,” he said, adding that some lawmakers may attempt to put “a little distance between themselves and Trump.”
The poll was conducted January 27–30, 2026, among 1,462 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of ±2.9 percentage points.
