Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was arrested Tuesday ahead of a scheduled criminal trial in Oslo involving multiple serious charges, including rape, drug offenses, and assault.

According to Norwegian authorities, Høiby is set to stand trial at the Oslo District Court, with proceedings expected to run until March 19. Prosecutors have outlined an extensive case alleging criminal activity over several years.

Police announced last week that six additional counts were added to the indictment, including a narcotics offense from 2020. Authorities allege Høiby transported approximately 3.5 kilograms of marijuana. These charges were added following an indictment issued in August.

Court filings indicate the case now includes 38 separate counts. Prosecutors allege four rapes occurring in 2018, 2023, and 2024. The defense has denied the most serious allegations.

A judge ordered Høiby detained for up to four weeks, citing concerns about the risk of reoffending. Prosecutors stated he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years for the most serious offenses and up to 16 years if convicted on multiple counts. A verdict is expected several weeks after the trial concludes.

The case has intensified public scrutiny of the Norwegian royal family. Crown Prince Haakon issued a brief statement saying the family is “thinking a lot about all the parties concerned in this case.” Despite the controversy, recent polling shows continued public support for the monarchy.
