President Donald Trump defended Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a White House press conference, stating that a large portion of the agency’s officers are Hispanic and questioning why the agency continues to face hostility from the public.

Speaking from the White House, Trump said ICE agents are often unfairly targeted despite carrying out federal law enforcement duties. He emphasized that many officers come from immigrant and minority backgrounds, arguing that criticism of the agency frequently overlooks the diversity within its ranks.

“ICE is largely Hispanic,” Trump said, adding that agents are enforcing laws passed by Congress and should not be vilified for doing their jobs.

The president’s remarks come amid heightened tensions surrounding ICE operations, particularly following recent high-profile enforcement actions and protests in several U.S. cities. Demonstrations against ICE have intensified in recent weeks, fueled by concerns over use-of-force incidents, detention practices, and the agency’s role in immigration enforcement.

Critics argue that opposition to ICE is not directed at individual agents, but at broader policies they say contribute to fear within immigrant communities. Civil rights organizations have called for increased oversight and accountability, while local officials in some jurisdictions have publicly criticized federal immigration enforcement tactics.

Supporters of ICE, including the White House, maintain that the agency plays a critical role in enforcing immigration laws, combating human trafficking, and protecting national security. Administration officials have repeatedly stated that ICE agents operate under strict rules of engagement and are subject to internal and external review.

No official Department of Homeland Security data currently confirms that ICE’s workforce is majority Hispanic, though past government reports indicate that Hispanic officers make up a significant portion of the agency compared to other federal law enforcement bodies.

As the debate continues, the White House has signaled it will continue backing ICE operations while dismissing what it describes as politically motivated attacks against federal agents.
