Former president claims the bank closed his accounts following the January 6 Capitol riot, alleging political discrimination without presenting public evidence.

Former President Donald Trump said he plans to file a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, alleging the bank improperly closed his accounts in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack.
Trump stated that the lawsuit would be filed within the next two weeks, claiming the bank’s decision amounted to political discrimination tied to his role in events surrounding January 6. He has asserted that major financial institutions targeted him personally because of his political position.
The bank has not publicly commented on the potential legal action. JPMorgan Chase previously stated that it reassessed certain client relationships following the Capitol riot, citing internal risk and compliance reviews conducted during that period. Several U.S. financial institutions took similar steps amid heightened scrutiny over reputational, legal, and security risks.
Trump has raised comparable claims in earlier media appearances, including a CNBC interview in August, where he alleged discrimination by banks but did not provide publicly available evidence to support the accusation.
Legal analysts note that U.S. banks generally have broad discretion to terminate customer relationships, provided their actions do not violate anti-discrimination laws or contractual obligations. Any lawsuit would likely focus on whether JPMorgan Chase acted unlawfully or within established risk-management policies.
The dispute contributes to broader national debates over “debanking,” the role of private financial institutions in political controversies, and the limits of corporate discretion in client relationships.
