The U.S. Army has placed approximately 1,500 active-duty soldiers on standby in anticipation of a possible deployment to Minnesota, according to two defense officials familiar with the matter.
Pentagon officials said the troops are being prepared in response to a large-scale federal immigration enforcement operation currently taking place in the state. The soldiers have not yet been deployed and remain in a readiness status pending further direction from federal authorities.
Defense officials emphasized that any deployment would involve support roles only and would be carried out in accordance with federal law governing the use of military forces within the United States. Such actions typically require coordination between the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and state authorities.
The Pentagon has not disclosed which military units are involved, nor has it provided a specific timeline for a potential deployment. Officials also declined to comment on the scope or duration of the immigration operation, citing operational and security concerns.
Federal immigration enforcement efforts have intensified in several regions, prompting heightened public scrutiny and concerns from civil rights organizations and local leaders regarding community impact and federal authority.
As of Sunday evening, no final decision had been made regarding whether the troops would be deployed.
