U.S. officials have confirmed that a small American military team has been deployed to Nigeria, marking the first public acknowledgment of U.S. forces on the ground in the country since U.S. airstrikes against ISIS-linked groups in December.
The confirmation was made during a press briefing by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), according to statements attributed to Dagvin Anderson, the general overseeing the command. AFRICOM said the move reflects increased collaboration between the United States and Nigeria on security matters.
Anderson indicated that the deployment followed discussions with Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s president, during a meeting held in Rome late last year. He described the U.S. presence as a “small team” bringing “unique capabilities” intended to augment Nigeria’s long-standing efforts to address security threats.
No additional details were provided regarding the size of the team, the exact nature of its mission, or its rules of engagement. Officials also did not clarify when the personnel arrived in Nigeria or how long they are expected to remain.
Nigeria has for years cooperated with the United States on counterterrorism initiatives, particularly in response to violence linked to ISIS and other extremist groups operating in parts of the region. U.S. assistance has historically included intelligence sharing, training, and logistical support.
While AFRICOM emphasized that the deployment is meant to support Nigerian-led operations, the lack of publicly available details leaves open questions about the scope and duration of the U.S. military presence. Analysts note that such limited disclosures are common in sensitive security partnerships, especially amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in West Africa.
