Two people were shot Thursday afternoon in East Portland by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, according to Portland police, prompting an active federal investigation.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2:18 p.m. in the 10000 block of Southeast Main Street. Portland police officers responded to the scene, applied a tourniquet to one of the injured individuals, and requested emergency medical personnel. Authorities secured multiple scenes in the area as the situation unfolded.

The incident coincided with heightened tensions in Portland, where downtown protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were taking place. Demonstrations had been planned to confront Portland City Hall and followed the recent fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman killed in Minneapolis.

Media crews reported police tape outside Adventist Health Portland, a damaged vehicle near the scene, and a brief lockdown at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center as a precautionary measure.

In response to the shooting, the Portland City Council recessed its session. Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney said both individuals who were shot were still alive and that officials were hopeful for positive updates regarding their condition.

The FBI’s Portland Field Office confirmed it is leading an active and ongoing investigation into the shooting, which occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. Customs and Border Protection operates under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Federal officials said a public statement is expected.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting and the identities of those involved have not yet been released.
