U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on Friday with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Fils-Aimé to reaffirm the United States’ support for Haiti’s stability and security, according to an official readout released by the U.S. Department of State.

The call, attributed to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, focused on Haiti’s ongoing security crisis, marked by escalating violence from armed gangs and deep political instability. Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of strong and consistent leadership, stating that Haiti’s current wave of violence can only be brought under control through firm governance backed by the Haitian people.

During the discussion, Secretary Rubio underscored the significance of Prime Minister Fils-Aimé’s continued tenure, describing it as essential to efforts aimed at confronting what the United States characterized as terrorist gang activity destabilizing the country.

The Secretary also addressed Haiti’s transitional political structure, asserting that the Transitional Presidential Council must be dissolved by February 7. The statement warned against corrupt actors attempting to interfere in Haiti’s path toward elected governance for personal or political gain.

“Haiti’s leader must choose Haiti’s stability,” the readout stated, signaling a clear expectation from Washington regarding the direction of Haiti’s political transition.

In a strong warning, the United States indicated it would impose “steep costs” on corrupt politicians accused of supporting armed gangs or contributing to what it described as terrorism in Haiti.

The call comes amid continued international concern over Haiti’s security collapse, stalled political transition, and growing pressure for decisive action to restore order and pave the way for credible elections.
