United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday called on all parties involved in the unfolding situation surrounding Venezuela to strictly uphold international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
In a public statement and subsequent remarks to the UN Security Council, Guterres said that even in highly complex and confused situations, states must remain anchored in international legal obligations.
He stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity, while reiterating the prohibition of the threat or use of force under international law. According to the Secretary-General, existing international legal mechanisms are designed to address challenges such as illicit narcotics trafficking, disputes over resources, and human rights concerns without undermining global stability.
“The power of the law must prevail,” Guterres stated, emphasizing that lawful, multilateral processes remain the appropriate path for resolving international disputes.
His remarks come amid heightened international scrutiny of developments involving Venezuela, raising concerns among diplomats about broader implications for global governance and the authority of multilateral institutions.
Guterres urged UN member states to pursue diplomatic solutions through established international channels, underscoring that adherence to international law remains essential for maintaining peace and order.
The Secretary-General’s full remarks were delivered to the UN Security Council and later published by the United Nations.
Update pending: United Nations officials indicated that further information and potential follow-up discussions may emerge as diplomatic engagements continue. Haitian Prime News will provide updates as official confirmations become available.
