A Wisconsin circuit court judge has resigned from office following her conviction on federal obstruction charges, a case that has intensified national debates over immigration enforcement, judicial authority, and political accountability.
Hannah Dugan, a Milwaukee County Circuit Court judge, stepped down after being found guilty of obstructing justice for helping an undocumented immigrant evade arrest by federal immigration officers. The conviction, handed down last month, prompted swift political backlash, with Republican lawmakers threatening impeachment proceedings if she remained on the bench.
The case was first reported by Local News, and the Associated Press.
Judge Dugan was photographed leaving the federal courthouse in Milwaukee following a court hearing related to the matter. According to prosecutors, her actions went beyond judicial discretion and crossed into direct interference with federal law enforcement operations, a claim her supporters dispute.
In response to her resignation, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, announced that the vacancy would be filled without delay. A spokesperson for the governor said the administration would move quickly to ensure continuity in the county’s judicial system.
The resignation effectively halted impeachment efforts, though Republican lawmakers framed the outcome as a necessary consequence of what they described as a serious breach of public trust. They argue the case demonstrates that judges are not above the law and must be held accountable when they obstruct federal authority.
Democrats and civil liberties advocates, however, warn that the case could have far-reaching implications for judicial independence. They contend that criminal prosecution and impeachment threats against judges risk politicizing the judiciary, particularly in cases involving immigration, where legal, moral, and political questions often intersect.
The case arrives at a time of heightened tension between federal immigration enforcement agencies and state or local officials across the country. As immigration remains one of the most polarizing issues in U.S. politics, courts are increasingly drawn into conflicts that extend well beyond the courtroom.
Judge Dugan’s departure closes one chapter of the controversy, but legal experts note that the precedent set by her conviction may continue to shape how judges, prosecutors, and lawmakers navigate immigration-related cases nationwide.
For now, the focus turns to the appointment of her successor and the broader implications of a case that underscores how deeply immigration politics have penetrated America’s legal institutions
